【Column】Building the KEMOCLUB World: The Tech and Space Design Behind It

The dedicated VRChat world is what makes KEMOCLUB, KEMOCLUB. It started with organizer SORAMI wanting to "have a cozy home in VRChat," which somehow turned into "I want to build the ultimate virtual dance floor."

Here's a look at how the world was built.

1. Starting with Zero Unity Knowledge

In May 2020, it all began when SORAMI purchased the world asset "VirtualComfortRoom:Edge" by Lura. With absolutely zero Unity experience, the massive hierarchy of objects was overwhelming. Studying YouTube tutorials night after night, he slowly modified the room. The feeling of uploading it for the first time, like acquiring actual virtual real estate. That feeling remains unforgettable.

2. Real Nightclub References for Lighting

"I want to create real club vibes in VR." With that in mind, SORAMI implemented noriben's "BeamLightShade" and built a custom stage lighting system. The references for lighting placement and movement were real clubs at the forefront of Japan's club scene:

  • 1OAK Tokyo
  • ageHa
  • WOMB

Recreating these dynamic arrays was no easy task; light baking took over three hours per run, and failures were constant. But after enough attempts, the animated, synchronized lighting system finally came together.

3. Why a "Club-Only" Space Doesn't Work

The thing we cared about most was creating a space where attendees could take home beautiful screenshots.

Plenty of incredible worlds already exist out there. Creators with far more skill pour their ideas and time into building amazing spaces. But one thing always struck me as odd: everything was too much of a club.

Outside of events, I spend my time in chill worlds, places where you can just relax.

Can you really spend 7 hours straight in a flashy, loud environment? I don't think so. The world we built for Vol.6 wasn't a failure, but there was no escape from it. It was dark everywhere, and after the event ended, nobody stuck around. Within an hour, the place would be empty. When a space is too functional, people can't even achieve the basic goal of socializing. They watch their favorite DJ and leave for another world.

That leaves no room for staff or DJs to receive feedback either. People's honest reactions live in those brief, in-the-moment comments. That applies not just to music, but to planning and operations too.

A VRChat club event isn't just a place to listen to music. It's where you spend time with friends you've met there and make memories together. That's why we focused on lighting that looks great from any camera angle, atmospheric particles like indoor fireworks, and interactive light controls that attendees can play with themselves. Everything was designed around "beauty as an experience."

The KEMOCLUB world was built on trial and error, and the wish to give everyone in VRChat beautiful memories to take home. Even as we build new worlds, that's not going to change.
